Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Today, the Bidhannagar Police faced strong opposition while attempting to demolish an illegal multi-storied building in near Chingrighata in Sukanta Nagar, Kolkata. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had marked the structure as unsafe due to its dilapidated condition, posing a risk to public safety. However, the demolition operation was halted when the residents of the building locked themselves inside and refused to allow the police or KMC officials to enter. The residents are demanding alternative housing before they will vacate the premises, citing concerns over displacement with no relocation options provided.
The police, including personnel from the Bidhannagar Police Station, were deployed to oversee the operation, but the residents continued to obstruct the demolition by blocking access. Despite efforts to negotiate with the residents, the situation remained tense, and the demolition could not proceed as planned. As of now, the building remains standing, and authorities have not provided a new timeline for the demolition. The municipal body maintains that the structure must be dismantled for public safety, while the residents continue to resist without relocation assurances.
